Kenilworth

The historical novel "Kenilworth" was first published in 1821. Its plot tells the tragic story of the charming beauty Amy Robsart and the ambitious Earl of Robert Dudley, the favorite of the great Queen Elizabeth Tudor. Readers will be presented with picturesque images of England in the 16th century, a luxurious royal court with its sophisticated intrigues, and the ancient castle of Kenilworth shrouded in mysteries. Illustrations for the text were made by French engravers Fernand Jacques François Lemaitre (1850–1929), Diogenes Ulysses Napoleon Maillard (1840–1926), Victor-Armand Poirson (1859–1893), and Édouard Riou (1833–1900). All these artists are characterized by a penchant for detailed depiction of costumes, interiors, and landscapes, which beautifully complement Scott's skillfully crafted novels.
