Mermaid hunter Dashford Hollander receives his first solo assignment. He goes to a quiet lake where people go missing, and in the neighboring town of St. Ignace, houses burn down and unexplained murders occur.

Dash is convinced that this is the work of mermaids who possess hypnosis. He intends to eradicate the evil, but his acquaintance with the townspeople makes him doubt who the real criminal is and who the victim is.
