James Hadley Chase (real name René Raymond) is known worldwide as an unrivaled master of gripping plots and a classic of the detective genre, as well as a keen observer of human souls, a sort of Balzac of the detective genre. He wrote about 90 novels, which have been translated into dozens of languages, and many of them have been successfully adapted for film. The future writer came from the family of a retired British officer, and his father envisioned a scholarly career for René. But at the age of 18, René left school and permanently left his parental home. He tried many professions before becoming a book distribution agent and thoroughly studied the book business from the inside. Chase later recalled: "…I had to knock on a hundred thousand doors, and behind each one I could meet any of the characters from my future novels…"
