The series “Theatrical Seasons” is an exciting journey into the world of theater.
“Russian Shakespeare”, “Zamoskvoretsky Columbus” — this is how his contemporaries referred to playwright Alexander Nikolaevich Ostrovsky. The creator of the Russian national repertoire, he introduced a whole gallery of original images to the stage. Ostrovsky's heroes are affluent merchants and petty officials, provincial actors and pious wanderers, wealthy widows and young women eligible for marriage. The creative fate of the playwright was closely tied to the Maly Theater, rightly called the “House of Ostrovsky”: he participated in the productions of his plays, befriended actors, and often attended rehearsals.
This edition includes six of A. N. Ostrovsky's most famous works: the dramas “Thunderstorm” and “Dowryless”, the comedies “Our People — Let’s Count!” and “For Every Wise Man, There’s Enough Simplicity”, as well as the plays about people in theater “Forest” and “The Guilty Are Innocent”, where the stage and life are intricately intertwined. The book features photographs of famous productions of the playwright's works: from performances on the imperial stage to the directorial experiments of Vsevolod Meyerhold, Sergei Eisenstein, and Alexander Tairov.
