The beautiful Esmeralda captivates the hearts of several men: the kind and devoted bell-ringer Quasimodo, who is ready to do anything for her; the treacherous priest Claude Frollo, tormented by feelings of passion and anger; Captain Phoebus de Chateaupers, whose feelings are superficial and selfish.
The gothic atmosphere of the novel enhances the drama and mystique of the events: the gloomy arches of Notre-Dame, mysterious shadows, and majestic stained glass create a backdrop where light and darkness, love and hate, beauty and ugliness intertwine. The cathedral itself is not just an architectural monument, but a living symbol of the eternal struggle of human passions and spiritual quests.
Thanks to the emergence of this novel, we can admire one of the most beautiful gothic cathedrals in the world, right in the heart of Paris. Hugo drew attention to the cathedral with his work, and he did this intentionally, as Notre-Dame was about to be demolished.
