USA, 1920s. Martin Erousmit was fascinated by the world of medicine since childhood. Later, he decided to dedicate himself to bacteriology, searching for cures for infectious diseases. However, life takes its course: the young man cannot be an ascetic, so... he gets married... A wife needs to be supported, but science doesn't bring in money. Medical practice in the hospital is a different matter. So why these little-needed studies? Why waste a life on a search that may bring nothing? Medical practice benefits everyone much more — including yourself! And still, one cannot escape their calling. It calls to return to the thorny path of scientific inquiry. Such is the plot of Sinclair Lewis's novel "Erousmit," which brought the author the Pulitzer Prize. Later, the author was also awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for his creative achievements, one of which was writing this work.
