Evening with Claire

Gaito Gazdanov (1903—1971) — a Russian émigré writer, who was regarded by his contemporaries as being in the same league as V. Nabokov. The action of the novel «Evening with Claire» takes place in Paris in the 1920s. Russian émigré Nikolai meets the charming Frenchwoman Claire, whom he fell in love with back in 1917 in pre-revolutionary Petersburg. Their meetings transport the hero into the world of his lost homeland: a carefree childhood, studying in a gymnasium, and the tragic trials of the Civil War. The book also includes the novel «The Ghost of Alexander Wolf», which allowed Gazdanov to leave his job as a taxi driver and start earning a living through literary work.
