Alistair MacLean (1922–1987) - a British writer, author of 28 thrillers and adventure stories, screenwriter. His name is widely known to readers around the world. MacLean's books have sold over 150 million copies, and 18 films have been made based... on his novels, scripts, and plots. In 1983, the University of Glasgow awarded the writer an honorary doctorate in literature.

The collection opens with the novel "The Golden Rendezvous." Terrorists infiltrate a luxury cruise liner. They quickly take hostages, but among the crew's officers is a man who stands almost alone against the criminals.
Nearby Cuba, a plane carrying secret cargo is shot down ("Fear Unlocks Doors"). Along with the crew, the family of the airline's co-owner perishes. Now their only desire is to avenge those responsible for the disaster.
