Jack London created the image and story of his hero during a yacht voyage, which is why the sea plays an important role in the book. He wrote Martin Eden based on himself, and Ruth – on his first love. The novel captivated readers so much that after a while, a "Martin Eden syndrome" appeared in psychology.
