Once a wealthy and distinguished gentleman leaves his daughter at a prestigious girls' boarding school. At first, the headmistresses surround the little girl with care, however, when it comes time to pay the new bills, it turns out that everything... they were told about the girl's family is a lie. Mr. Ellin, a bored local bachelor, and the lonely widow Mrs. Chalfont decide to investigate the past of the mysterious pupil.
In 1854, Charlotte Brontë began working on a new novel. "Emma" was supposed to be the most ambitious work of the writer since "Jane Eyre", but due to illness, Charlotte managed to write only a few dozen pages. There were several attempts to complete the story, but the most successful was the version presented in this edition by Claire Boylan.
