The Count Viyelgorsky's chief manager, Mr. Popov, has disappeared. He left to collect money from the estates and did not return. Witnesses claim to have seen Popov when he was rowing across to the other shore, towards the train station. He was holding a suitcase with money. However, the manager never appeared at the station. The investigation has been entrusted to the judicial investigator Ivan Volovtsev. He decides to keep an eye on one of the suspects, in whose house there appears to have been a struggle. But there is no confirmation of this version. Volovtsev was already ready to agree that the manager's disappearance was an accident, but suddenly one very strange circumstance catches his attention...
