The New Typography

The book was first published in 1928 in Germany and became a sort of manifesto of modern typography. It is a thorough and engaging study that covers a wide range of issues—from theories of social criticism and the history of art to the increasing importance of photography in graphic design. In addition, in "The New Typography," Jan Tschichold formulates extremely clear and precise rules for the design of printed materials. The last chapters contain detailed practical guidelines for laying out everyday business documents—including recommendations for choosing paper sizes and the correct combination of fonts.
Although the standards described in the book have become outdated and are no longer used, and Tschichold himself later abandoned many of the ideas he expressed, the publication will be valuable to graphic designers, typographers, illustrators, and layout artists, as well as a wide range of readers interested in the history of graphic and type design.
