The Sapphire Lord in the Poetry of Alvars

Alvars ("immersed in God") are the name of Tamil saint-poets who lived between the 6th and 9th centuries. Their expressive, candid, often spontaneous verses formed the basis of a culture and philosophy known in India as bhakti, or devoted love... for God. The poetry of the Alvars was dedicated to Vishnu - whom they referred to as the Lord of sapphire color. Their lyrics reflect the experience of divine knowledge and at the same time serve as divine revelation. The poetry of the Alvars about God remains alive despite the centuries that have passed. In their immortal verses, they learned to love and left humanity lessons of love.
