The famous epic "Kalevala," which inspired J. R. R. Tolkien to create "The Lord of the Rings," is reinterpreted by contemporary Finnish artist Sami Makkonen in the format of a graphic novel.
Through visual means, the author tells stories about the heroes of folk poetry and mythology, searching for love, wealth, and magic in the distant lands of the ancient North. The world of Kalevala, created by the artist, is lyrical, harsh, and completely unique.
Sami Makkonen is a well-known Finnish comic artist. He studied at the Art Academy in Tartu and built a successful career in the USA. He drew for the American comic series Hatter M., which made the NY Times bestseller list.
The author of the comic based on the video game Ryse: Sword of Damocles (Microsoft/IDW) and the webcomic Clive Barker's Hellraiser: The Dark Watch. Winner of the Finnish Sarjis award for best comic in the fantasy genre, nominee for the American Ghostly award.
