Sakhalin Island

135 years ago, in 1890, the young writer Chekhov decided on a risky journey to the distant and harsh penal island of Sakhalin, and upon his return, he published a book of the same name, which combined travel notes and... an exploration of the unique history of the island and the fates of its inhabitants — the indigenous population and political exiles. This anniversary edition, dedicated not only to the 165th anniversary of the author's birth but also to the 130th anniversary of the book's first publication, includes rare illustrations from scientific studies that Chekhov used to prepare for the journey, as well as unique photographs taken by the writer's acquaintance, photographer I.I. Pavlovsky. The collection also includes sketches "From Siberia," stories written based on impressions from the journey, and selected letters from Chekhov to his family and friends sent during the trip.
