Ethics for European Psychologists

Every psychologist must know and adhere to ethical standards and be able to resolve ethical dilemmas. European psychological associations rely on the European Ethical Meta-Code, developed by the European Federation of Psychological Associations (EFPA), when creating their codes of professional ethics; therefore, the meta-code is also a standard that applies to all European psychologists.

   This book examines the ethical meta-code through real-life situations, allowing for discussion of various possibilities. Each of the four main ethical principles — respect, competence, responsibility, and honesty — is given a separate chapter. The remaining chapters address significant ethical issues and provide practical recommendations and examples on how to resolve ethical problems and how to use the meta-code.

    Practicing psychologists can learn from the book how to maintain ethics in daily practice and resolve complex ethical dilemmas. The book will also be useful for students in psychology departments and in continuing education courses.

     The ethical meta-code is a foundation that not only helps psychological associations develop their ethical codes and recommendations to regulate professional practice and address complaints about violations of ethical norms but also fosters an understanding among recipients of psychological services of the ethical standards that can be expected from professional psychological practice.
