For the first time, "Three Men in a Boat, Not Counting the Dog" was published in England in 1889 and remains an unsurpassed example of English humor to this day. Jerome K. Jerome wrote a hilariously funny story about three... friends who, out of boredom and imaginary ailments, drift down the Thames, inspired by their own honeymoon spent on a small boat. At that time, unrealistic characters by Conan Doyle, Kipling, and Stevenson were "in vogue", while ordinary and somewhat even mediocre friends J., George, and Harris became real heroes to English readers. The success was deafening. To this day, the book has been translated into almost all world languages and has been repeatedly adapted for the screen, stage, television, and radio. The novel influenced many humorists and satirists and also contributed to the development of river tourism.
