In 1814, English inventor Mark Isambard Brunel presented to Emperor Alexander I a project for the world's first tunnel boring shield for the construction of tunnels under the Neva. This shield was used to build an underwater tunnel under the Thames for the London Underground, but in the city on the Neva, the first underground line only appeared in November 1955, although it was planned to open it in 1925 and 1942.
