Alexey Petrovich Yermolov is a mysterious, controversial, and yet legendary figure in Russian history. Bold and independent from his youth, Yermolov irritated high-ranking individuals. The uprising in Poland, military actions against the French in Italy, the siege of the fortress... of Derbent, temporary disgrace, participation in the coalition wars against Napoleon, the War of 1812, and finally, the Caucasus. Yermolov began with the conquest of Chechnya and Mountainous Dagestan. Unyielding villages were burned, gardens were cut down, cattle were seized, conquered peoples were forced to take an oath of loyalty to the Russian Emperor, taxed, and hostages were taken from them. The name of Alexey Yermolov became synonymous, with which the mountaineers frightened their children.
