The White Sail of a Lonely Ship. The Son of the Regiment

«The White Sail of a Lonely Ship» — a story by the classic of Soviet literature Valentin Kataev, which is part of the golden fund of literature. The vivid world seen through the eyes of nine-year-old children is painted in warm colors of the summer Black Sea. This world is full of exciting, and sometimes dangerous adventures of two boys from Odessa, small witnesses and participants in the stormy events of the First Russian Revolution. The story is part of the tetralogy «Waves of the Black Sea» (the story «A Hut in the Steppe», 1956; novels «Winter Wind», 1960; «Catacombs», 1948).

«The Son of the Regiment» — a story that brought the writer great popularity (1945; Stalin Prize, 1946), a truthful tale of the fate of an orphan boy, unbroken by two years of wandering in the partisan rear, who finally found his «own» and was adopted by a fighting regiment. The institution of «sons of the regiment» has since been established in the domestic army; a play based on the story was written, and a film was made (1946, directed by V.M. Pronin). The author managed to masterfully convey modernity. The authenticity of the details of everyday life enhances the touching plot, in which pain and compassion are inextricably linked.
