This edition features the works of two authors on the division of Germany and Austria into occupation zones by the allied forces of the victorious powers in World War II. The author of the first work, historian Michael Balfour, has extensive experience studying Germany. From 1945 to 1947, he held a position in the British Element of the Control Commission. His account concerns one of the most difficult and dark periods in the country's history – 1945–1946 after over a decade of Nazi rule. John Mayer, a member of the Political Department of the British Element of the Commission, addresses the same time period but refers to the situation in Austria. Both works complement each other, shedding light on the four-power (USSR, the United Kingdom, the USA, and France) control over the two defeated countries.
