The Gambler

The novel "The Gambler" by F. M. Dostoevsky is a psychological investigation of the destructive power of gambling addiction and human passion.

Dostoevsky wrote "The Gambler" in 26 days after he lost everything in the gambling tables. He promised the publisher to create a novel in the shortest time and took up the pen. The familiar passion for gambling was easily transferred to the pages of his work.

Aleksey Ivanovich, a poor nobleman and private tutor, lives with a general's family at a German resort, Roulettenburg. His mad infatuation leads him to the gambling hall. He is confident that he can control the game. But he soon realizes: roulette does not forgive mistakes.
