A new edition of the book, published in Hungary in 1982, and in Russia in 1996. After the collapse of the socialist bloc, the author, having freed himself from the rigid confines of historical materialism, significantly revised and supplemented the text, resulting in a fundamentally different book, unbound by ideological dogmas.
The book is aimed at a broad readership and covers 20 centuries of the history of papal spiritual authority and the church state from the Apostle Peter to John Paul II.
