The second year of the great famine and terrible plague, caused by the prolonged bad weather that covered all of Northern Russia, is underway. The urban community of Veliky Novgorod is shaken by riots, bloody internal conflicts, and quarrels, both among the prominent individuals and between its lower classes, the simple urban folk. Prince Yaroslav has been overthrown, and all power is in the hands of temporizing boyars, mired in intrigues.
