The Ill-Fated Number

In the furnished rooms of the suburban city of Dmitrov, the commercial traveler Grigory Stasyko was murdered. Death occurred from a blow to the temple with a brass knuckles, and the room was locked from the inside, with the windows... closed. At the time of check-in, the guest had two boxes of expensive pocket watches and a substantial amount of money, which later disappeared. The case is assigned to forensic investigator Ivan Fedorovich Volovtsov. The merchant's wife Katz comes under suspicion, as she had previously threatened to deal with Stasyko for offending her husband. Moreover, her brother managed to pay at the nearest brothel with watches from the murdered commercial traveler’s luggage. It seems the picture of the crime is clear… But Volovtsov is tormented by doubts. And not without reason: unexpectedly, a new suspect appears in the case…
