In Krylov's works, «the common people of Russia suddenly gained the right to speak, previously only composing secretly and passing down stories, epics, songs, legends orally from generation to generation». According to A. Rumyantsev, the national poet borrowed plots from world literature, which under his pen gained a truly Russian folk character and became original. The people spoke in his verses. The publication includes all fables as well as the plays of I. A. Krylov, written by him over the years.
