The Raised Virgin Land

"The Raised Virgin Land" is one of the most extensive works of the renowned Soviet writer Mikhail Alexandrovich Sholokhov (1905-1984) about the most complex and tragic episodes of collectivization in the Don region. A Leningrad worker, Semyon Davydov, arrives at the village of Gremyachy Log with the aim of helping the Don Cossacks transition to new collective forms of economy. In opposition to the kulaks, he manages to organize a collective farm, but his method of persuading the poor clearly conflicts with the coercive measures of the local party cell secretary, Makari Nagulny.
