The second novel of the saga about the town of North Bart and its inhabitants. Sally, during the time that has passed since the events of the first book, has suddenly been struck by luck, but Sally has always understood... that luck and fortune are fleeting things, and now he is looking at the cardiologist's conclusion, according to which he has at most two years left, and likely only one. Sally is not particularly troubled by this fact; what worries him more is how he will communicate this news to the people who form the essence of his tumultuous life. Ruth, his long-time married lover; the faithful simpleton Rub, who still wonders if he can be called Sally's best friend; his son and grandson, for whom Sally has been largely an absent figure throughout his life—how will he tell them? But there is also Karl Robak, who continues to nurture grand projects, and Police Chief Douglas Raymer, whose wife, while running away with a mysterious lover, literally only made it to the last step of the stairs, not to mention all the other inhabitants of North Bart, who have problems as plentiful as fallen leaves in an autumn forest... And the whole town will hardly cope without Sally, especially when the main local villain has returned from not-so-distant places...
