Nikolai Semenovich Leskov (1831–1895) is a famous Russian writer, publicist, and literary critic, standing alongside "such creators of Russian literature as L. Tolstoy, Gogol, Turgenev, Goncharov."
In the writer's work, the traditions of the clergy and the bourgeoisie were clearly reflected,...
despite his noble origin. Contemporaries noted Leskov's special immersion in provincial life and his ability to depict it accurately, without embellishments. The works written in the technique of storytelling were perceived as unimagined and precisely projecting the everyday life of ordinary people, which was facilitated by the speech characteristics of the heroes and the individualization of the characters' language, which he considered the most important components of literary creativity. D. P. Svyatopol-Mirsky wrote about him: "Russians recognize Leskov as the most Russian of Russian writers and who knew the Russian people deeper and wider than anyone else as they really are."
This edition includes selected novellas and stories by N. S. Leskov, written by him at different times.
