The Moan of the Mountain

An elderly businessman, Shingo Ogata, is close to retirement. He is increasingly troubled by the rising number of deaths among his peers, the fleeting nature of human life, and the strained relationships within his own family – his daughter is leaving her husband and returning to her parental home with two small children, while his son openly cheats on his wife. Only his daughter-in-law, Kikuko, a quiet, sweet, and loyal woman, somehow brightens the old man's days. «The Moan of the Mountain» is a slow-paced and melancholic work, full of philosophical reflections and subtle observations of post-war Japan.
