More than twenty years ago, the unfortunate businessman William Dorrit went bankrupt, failed to pay his creditors on time, and ended up in the Marshalsea debtor's prison. His whole family was forced to move into the prison with him — and there, in Marshalsea, his youngest daughter Amy was born. It was on the fragile shoulders of Amy, nicknamed Little for her miniature frame, that the care of the entire family soon fell. Enduring all trials stoically, the modest girl earns her living through honest work and tries to look after her father, sister, and brother.
