The doors of brothels and secret dens were widely open before any girl wishing to quickly improve her financial situation before the revolution. The seemingly easy earnings turned out to be an illusion in practice – stepping over the threshold of an immoral establishment, none of them belonged to themselves anymore. Prostitutes were bought and sold, almost all their money was taken away, and they were "tied" to houses of tolerance with inflated debts. Many were uneducated and unable to count, making it difficult to resist lawlessness. Over the years, they degenerated and became accustomed to the corrupt environment, and they themselves were in no hurry to escape the abyss in which they found themselves.
