Wallis Ann takes on the care of her little brother Seth and her older sister Lacey, who is unable to speak, although she has the rare gift of reproducing any music from memory. Unable to establish a household, the Stamper family begins to wander from place to place in search of food... Thanks to Lacey's talent, they manage to join a traveling circus, but new misfortunes await them there.
