Zhenya is 15 years old, and she has a peculiarity — she does not talk to everyone and not always, but this does not depend on her will. In early childhood, Zhenya demonstrated remarkable abilities: she began to speak and read early, quickly memorized poems, and was sociable and cheerful. But one incident in kindergarten changed everything. While Zhenya struggles with selective mutism and communicates with the world through photographs, teachers consider her unteachable, and classmates call her a mutant. However, in her inner monologues, Zhenya remains emotional, observant, and intelligent. Her warmth is enough for Uncle Frank, who has quarreled with his relatives, for parents who are surviving without a salary in the 1990s, and even for saving the cow Zorya, which is being taken to slaughter. Sister Sonya and school friend Fed have come up with a way out for Zhenya — she just has to follow their plan and dare to rebel at school, but reality is not a movie. Maybe the tests from magazines, where Zhenya looks for answers, will provide a way out? But they only confuse her more.

And while the world around her is bursting with the noise of dial-up, strikes, and the silent scream of Zhenya's favorite musician — Kurt Cobain, the girl finds a way to finally make herself heard by everyone. This story is about that very Zhenya, familiar to many from the adapted tale "Country Sasha."
