Hungarian historian Péter Gostoni shed light on the political and military events that occurred in the countries of the Danube region from August 1944 until the end of the war. As a result of many years of research, analysis of the battle logs of the Army Group "South", a number of interviews with former commanders and officers of divisions, corps, and armies of the Wehrmacht, as well as political and military figures of the Danube countries, studying a vast amount of memoir literature and documentary sources, the author was able to present a realistic picture of how the fate of not only the German Reich but also the future of Romania, Bulgaria, Hungary, Yugoslavia, and Czechoslovakia was determined in the Danube region.
