This book was written by historian and geographer Thomas Milner at the height of the Crimean War, during the first defense of Sevastopol. Without aiming for a detailed description of battles, the author provides an overview of the entire history of Crimea: Antiquity, when the peninsula was Greek, the Middle Ages, when it was ruled by the Genoese, then the Ottoman Empire and the Tatar khanate, and finally, the events leading to the Russo-Turkish War, as a result of which the peninsula became part of the Russian Empire. Milner focuses on the peculiarities of the geographical location and climate of this land, discusses its ancient monuments, the peoples inhabiting it, rulers and heroes of different epochs, as well as the endless military actions and political intrigues
