Fascinated by Japan, its culture, and landscapes, the renowned contemporary illustrator Benjamin Lacombe dreamt from a young age of illustrating Lafcadio Hearn's tales about the spirits and ghosts of the Land of the Rising Sun. Hearn became one of the first Western residents to obtain Japanese citizenship. He is known for traveling through various provinces, collecting and recording Japanese tales and legends about ghosts.
