It seemed that Europe was experiencing agony: the victory of totalitarianism, the triumph of atheism, and the thunderous rumblings of a new world war... Describing the onset of evil, Merezhkovsky believes in the ultimate victory of Light and Reason: "The Kingdom of Spirit is possible even for such as we are, because even in such humanity as it is now, a procession of the Spirit from Jesus to us is accomplished through the Saints."
