The ironic art historian Vilka has been transported to the world of Halo, where dark events are unfolding that the local university's inhabitants are diligently keeping silent about.
Vilka has to not only find out what is happening here but also deal with her personal problem — the fact that in the new world she has been assigned the role of familiar to the young wizard Arthur Edinburg, who is clearly at the center of the upcoming events.
