Aleksandr Alexandrovich Blok (1880–1921) — a Russian poet of the Silver Age, who became the only one among the symbolists recognized in the literary community as a poet of national significance even during his lifetime. Blok also wrote prose and journalism, engaged in dramaturgy, literary criticism, and translations. His work is full of paradoxical combinations of the mystical and the mundane, his poems are musical, resembling soothing lullabies in the early stages of his creativity, and wild gypsy songs in the later stages.
