Canadian writer Lucy Maud Montgomery (1874–1942) is known worldwide as the author of the books about the girl Anne of Green Gables. «The Blue Castle» is Montgomery's first and most popular novel for adult readers, an inspiring story of love... and transformation of the «hopeless old maid» Valancy Stirling, who leads a dull existence surrounded by annoying relatives. At twenty-nine, Valancy learns that she has no more than a year to live and decides to break free from the captivity of monotonous everyday life to embrace an unknown fate. Soon she realizes that the magical Blue Castle, which she often dreamed of in solitude, actually exists… «This novel seemed to me a refuge from the cares and worries of the real world,» Montgomery wrote in her diary. It has also become a «refuge» for numerous grateful readers: over the last century, «The Blue Castle» has undergone many reprints in its homeland and has been translated into all major languages.
