This poignant novel about Harold and Mary-Rose Grapes begins with these words. After the tragic death of their son, they forgot about the dreams of their youth and resigned themselves to life on a remote island far from the big world. However, fate once again puts them to the test, forcing them to leave their island in the most unpredictable way. On the night before the day when a new law regarding coastal development threatens the couple with eviction, a strong storm begins; lightning splits the cliff on which the Grapes' home stands, and the house, along with its peacefully sleeping owners, collapses into the sea with a chunk of rock.
