Fyodor Ivanovich Tyutchev (1803–1873) was an outstanding Russian poet, corresponding member of the Petersburg Academy of Sciences, translator, diplomat, and official. Continuing the traditions of Lomonosov and Derzhavin, Tyutchev, known for the fragmentary form of his poems and the cosmic reflection of human existence, resembled none of his contemporaries. In his philosophical lyrics, motifs of the tragic duality of the soul, torn between faith and disbelief, connected to the higher, "divine," realms of being and doomed to earthly, "mundane," existence, solitude in society, and a sense of being lost in the universe resonate distinctly.
This collection presents most of Tyutchev's poetic legacy.
