Peer Gynt

There are playwrights whose names embody Theatre in the highest sense, and among them is Henrik Johann Ibsen (1828 - 1906), the Norwegian playwright, reformer of European theatre, and founder of "new drama".

"Peer Gynt" - one of the most famous plays by Ibsen - was Ibsen's protest against romantic tendencies.

Despite this, in the cultural consciousness, the play remained the embodiment of Norwegian romanticism thanks to the scenes related to the image of Solveig and the music of Edvard Grieg.

In Russia, Ibsen was one of the "masters of thought" at the beginning of the 20th century; his plays were staged at the Moscow Art Theatre, and motifs from "Peer Gynt" sounded in the poetry of A. Blok.

"Peer Gynt" is as much a national work for Norwegians as "Eugene Onegin" by Pushkin is for Russians, and "Faust" by Goethe is for Germans.

The organic combination of high realism, tense plot, and vivid characters is what characterizes Ibsen's artistic style as a playwright.
