Peer Gynt

There are playwrights whose names embody Theatre in the highest sense, and among them is Henrik Johan Ibsen (1828 - 1906), the Norwegian playwright, reformer of European theatre, and founder of the "new drama". "Peer Gynt" - one of Ibsen's... most famous plays - was Ibsen's protest against romantic tendencies. Despite this, in cultural consciousness, the play has remained an embodiment of Norwegian romanticism due to the scenes associated with the image of Solveig and the music of Edvard Grieg. In Russia, Ibsen was one of the "lords of thought" at the beginning of the 20th century; his dramas were staged at the Moscow Art Theatre, and motifs from "Peer Gynt" echoed in the poetry of A. Blok. "Peer Gynt" is as much a national work for Norwegians as "Eugene Onegin" by Pushkin is for Russians, and "Faust" by Goethe is for Germans. The organic combination of high realism, intense plot, and concise vivid characters are the components that characterize Ibsen's artistic style as a playwright.
