Born into slavery on the tiny Caribbean island of Montserrat, Dorothy Kirwan managed to buy her freedom from her father — an Irish planter, and then she secured the release of her sister and mother. Through incredible efforts, she became a wealthy and influential woman, owning houses and land, from sugar plantations in Dominica and Barbados to a luxurious hotel in Demerara on the South American continent. This is the story of a real historical figure — a woman who managed to carve her way up in the monstrous conditions of slavery and colonialism, a woman who was not afraid to love and who stopped at nothing for her loved ones.
