Carmen

The works of Prosper Merimee (1803-1870) belong to the most brilliant pages in the history of 19th century French literature. Starting as a romantic, the writer closely approached critical realism, paving the way for outstanding realist masters such as Flaubert,... Maupassant, and Anatole France.
The literary heritage of Merimee is quite extensive: the historical novel "Chronicle of the Reign of Charles IX", a collection of plays "The Theater of Clara Gazul", travel notes, and of course, novellas.
The novella "Carmen" presented for the readers' attention is undoubtedly one of the most famous. The sad love story of the Basque Jose and the freedom-loving gypsy Carmen served as the basis for many artistic works - first and foremost the eponymous opera by Georges Bizet.
The book contains the text of the novella with comments and a dictionary.
