Jack London is a self-made man. Lacking systematic education, he read extensively from childhood – both fiction and philosophical and sociological works. He independently prepared for and entered the University of California, but due to a lack of funds, he... was forced to leave after the third semester. A craftsman, sailor, and later a farmer who experienced the hardships of physical labor, London consumed knowledge eagerly throughout his life and, at an early age, became passionate about his dream of becoming a writer, especially since he had something to say to readers. The writer was very popular in the USSR, and he was considered a socialist, even though he himself positioned himself against socialists – he remained an individual who preferred to achieve something in life primarily for himself and only then for society. The book offered to readers contains the unadapted text of the novel, accompanied by comments and a glossary.
