The book consists of stories published in a collection titled "Fancies and Goodnights," for which John Collier (once described as a "collector of demons and an old acquaintance of the devil himself") won the Edgar Award. Among the plethora of various unusual characters, one can find a genie trapped in a bottle, a cold-ridden demon, a fearless amazon, and an entire brood of ghosts from a department store. Playing with the timeless theme of deals with the devil, which has been prevalent in folklore for centuries, Collier, through his imagination, gives it a unique color and humor.
