Medieval Medicine. To Live or to Die

Natalia Pelezneva graduated from the master's program at the Higher School of Economics "Medieval Studies", is a doctoral student at the Higher School of Economics, and an employee of the Research and Educational Laboratory of Medieval Studies at the Higher School of Economics. As a science journalist, she has published in the magazines "Knife", "Schrödinger's Cat", and "PostScience". In this book, we will follow the development of medical theory, from which today's medicine has grown over the millennia — rational, evidence-based, with its high technologies and statistics. To see the different stages of the development of this knowledge, we will need to look into the Greek sanctuaries of Asclepius and into Arab hospitals-bimaristans, into wealthy houses surrounded by gardens, and into the homes of ordinary townspeople, regardless of their faith.
