Victorian England. Paul Bicott, the only heir of a provincial aristocrat, unable to tolerate the tyranny of his father and wishing to achieve fame in literature, goes to London. An enraged father denies him financial support, and Paul lives a... modest life as a budding writer, which, however, does not prevent him from falling madly in love with the daughter of the owner of a second-hand bookstore.
